“ISO 17025 Accreditation for Test Laboratories and How Failure Analysis Can Fit Into the Accreditation”

Jim Brusso & Les Engel, Engel Metallurgical Ltd
Thursday, February 15, 2024

At the Minnesota Chapter of ASM, increased innovation is one of our paths to providing the most value to our members. Please join us for our monthly meeting on Thursday, February 15, 2024 at Engineering Systems, Inc. (ESi) as we welcome Jim Brusso and Les Engel from Engel Metallurgical Ltd. Mr. Brusso and Mr. Engel will be speaking about “ISO 17025 Accreditation for Test Laboratories and How Failure Analysis Can Fit Into the Accreditation”. The meeting fee will include a light buffet dinner. Our hope is that by providing a casual atmosphere, we can encourage more members and non-members to attend our events.

About the Speakers

Les Engel is a Metallurgical Engineer and has worked for the General Electric Co. and Brown Boveri Turbomachinery. He now owns and works at Engel Metallurgical Ltd. Besides work activities, Les volunteers on the boards for the Central Minnesota Manufacturing Association, Benton-Stearns Workforce Investment Board, Partners for Student Success, the 360° Program, and the St. Cloud Symphony Orchestra. He is also involved in a number of Industry Advisory Committees for some Minnesota colleges, VEX Robotics, and is a member of the St. Cloud Sertoma Club. To fill out his weekends, he volunteers as an AV technician at his church.

both the company's quality manager and technical manager. Jim oversees the daily technical operations of the lab while also ensuring the work being done at Engel Metallurgical meets the quality requirements of ISO/IEC 17025. Jim graduated with an undergraduate, master's, and Ph.D. in metallurgical engineering from Michigan Technological University. He began his career as a principal development engineer at The Timken Company in Canton, Ohio. Jim held several positions throughout his time at Timken, including managing the Application Metallurgical Laboratory and serving as a section manager for quality assurance - process improvement. Jim joined Engel Metallurgical in 2000 and provides metallurgical consulting and failure analysis for manufacturing, insurance, and legal clients.

The importance of implementing and maintaining a quality management system, particularly one that is assessed by an external body, will be discussed. ISO/IEC 17025, "General requirements for the competence of testing and calibration laboratories", enables laboratories to demonstrate that they operate competently and generate valid results. Engel Metallurgical is ISO/IEC 17025 accredited by A2LA in the mechanical field of testing. ISO/IEC 17025 accreditation is the gold standard for metallurgical test labs, and Engel Metallurgical operates and maintains a quality management system covering both processes and documentation. Laboratories that are accredited to ISO/IEC 17025 generally operate in accordance with the principles of ISO 9001, but with additional technical requirements. ISO/IEC 17025 accreditation for test laboratories is associated with very specific test methods within the lab’s Scope of Accreditation. The lab must demonstrate competency and test validation through documented training, inter- and intra-laboratory comparison testing, and comparison of results with certified reference materials. Jim and Les will discuss what ISO/IEC 17025 accreditation means in failure analysis, where typically no two samples are alike. They will talk about how to define methods of analysis, and how applying the defined methods has allowed them to achieve ISO/IEC 17025 accreditation and improve/maintain high quality results.
